Southend almost increased their one goal lead early on due to crap defending by Ogbonna. He may not be the step up on Tomkins and Reid that everyone predicts. Interesting times ahead.

Tomkins strikes me as being a person that will accept constructive criticism. Especially coming from the likes of Bilic and Dicks.
Tomkins seems to be pretty level headed and I think he would the first to say he is far from the full package and needs much more development. I am sure he will get his head down, learn and work hard.

I reckon that we will see more footballing skills from our defenders.because they will have a midfield that they can pass to etc

I've long felt that Tomkins although very good in the air, reasonably fast and skilful, lacks concentration and positions himself badly so that he is often a yard behind the person he is supposed to be marking. He possibly could learn much from Bilic and Dicks to correct this weakness and make himself a more complete defender. Mind, he will need humility to achieve it, a quality not common among overpaid footballers.

Russ makes a very good point. It's going to be very interesting to see if Bilic will have an obvious first-choice eleven or whether he will rotate the squad. At CB he has four senior players to keep happy, which is a tall order. Then there is Henry, who will probably be off to Blackburn again. Then there are the two young, emerging CBs, Burke and Oxford, who apparently remained at the club on the basis of being told he would be in the first team squad. I would think at least one of those two ought to go out on loan.
But unless there are injuries it is going to be hard to keep all four senior CBs happy. Ogbonna will presumably be first choice, being a Bilic purchase and being the only left-footer. Reid is being touted as a possible captain but had a relatively poor season and has also lost a bit of respect for the way he held on for a big move which never happened. Tomkins and Collins were both more impressive than Reid last season, so it's going to be interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Bilic experimenting with three at the back, enabling Jenks and Cresswell to get forward much more, especially if we don't have two very good wingers in the side.

That's the problem though isn't it. Tomkins is good enough to be playing week in week out for all PL clubs (except the big three or four) so if he suddenly finds himself benched due to a Reid / Ogbonna parternship then he will be off like a shot. And the queue of clubs to sign him will be long.
This is the always the trouble for a club like West Ham. I have mentioned this before and it's to do with the breaking point. The big clubs have a much stronger breaking point. Whereby they can hold on to very good players and not play them week in week out. Players earn silly money at these bigger clubs so will gladly train hard, play a few cup games here and there, play a few games as cover for an injury and then go back to being sub.
There is also the connection to a bigger club that is worth them hanging around. As if or when they come to being sold they can demand more as they have come from 'Man Utd', Chelsea or Arsenal.
But, being honest, to say you have come from West Ham and were a reserve player doesn't really add much power to your CV.
As soon as a club like West Ham tries to develop and become bigger and more successful the pressure on the breaking point becomes intense. We have to build a solid sqaud with strength in depth but very good players will not accept sitting on the bench at a club like West Ham. All of a sudden the breaking point snaps and you find yourself with unhappy players who leave.
Then you are back to square one.

Re: TOMKINS

our defence should be solid this year you would expect from Bilic and Dicks, but i have concerns about both being manager and coach, selling Tomkins would not endear me to them both.

Croe is right. Tomkins was 16th best Prem player last season on equal ratings with Yaya Toure...

Wanted and selling are two different things. I'd be surprised if we got rid of another English player even if Townsend was the player we were after.

up there with the best eEnglish centre backs. Surprised he's been overlooked so far. Fantastic in the air also. Rarely gets beaten to A defensive or offensive header.
